Where We Came From

The Christian Recreation Program, which is now a ministry of Gospel Fellowship Presbyterian Church, began over 50 years ago in the heart and mind of a loving father and a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Walter Kenyon was the founding pastor of our church in 1975, but he was also the catalyst for the development of the Christian Recreation Program in 1958.  He and his wife Mary had a conviction to enrich their family's spiritual lives through prayer, reading God's Word, and spending some much needed family time playing and enjoying each other's company.  Children from the neighborhood wanted to join them as they played and the Kenyon's welcomed them with open arms.  This simple conviction to grow in grace as a family led to 50 years of ministry and outreach to the communities around Gospel Fellowship.

Over the years, God has sent Christian men and women to serve the Christian Recreation Program and carry on this great outreach to the community.  God has also provided willing hands, thousands of children, and all of the resources necessary to continue serving this great need in the community.  As Gospel Fellowship developed as a church and searched for land to build on, Roy and Sally Ferree donated 10 acres to the church.  Eventually they would add another 75 acres of land (85 acres total) to provide Gospel Fellowship with a home and plenty of space to continue to develop the Christian Recreation Program.  The history of our church is intimately connected to the history of this program and remains a ministry for which our church has a great conviction and a passion.

Over the years the program has seen many changes and developments.  There have been a number of directors and hundreds of volunteers who have made this ministry 'go'.  The one constant that has remained is the purpose set forth by Walter Kenyon, CRP Founder.  The work is grounded on certain great truths:

1.The Bible is the inerrant Word of God (All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for ever good work". 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

2. Jesus is Savior ("I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me". John 14:6)

3. Jesus is God ("at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow...every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father". Philippians 2:10

These simple truths are the foundation for what we hope to accomplish through the ministry of the Christian Recreation Program at Gospel Fellowship.  With these truths in mind we hope that our program will not shrink back in its faith but to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with confidence and bring this message not only to our generation, but plant the seeds that bring salvation through Jesus Christ to the coming generations.
